Two rival schools coming together.
Two sides to support – the black and white or the red and white.
But ONE greater purpose behind all that today stands for.
And ONE call to action that unites us, no matter whose side you are on.
The fight against gender-based violence, in our country, is being owned by our two school communities today.
Today, we get to do what we love, play rugby and hockey proudly for our schools, but with an added purpose and greater sense of meaning, knowing that every try / goal scored is a voice for those who have no voice, who live in fear, who are running – those who are victims of gender-based violence.
As part of the 150th celebrations, join Hilton College and Michaelhouse communities in activating generosity today, as we raise R150 000.
These funds will go towards the work of the Kolisi Foundation – who distribute Power2You Packs to women across our country who are victims of Gender-Based Violence (Read more below). In addition, we are bringing this home, as part of today’s funds will go towards the Rape Crisis Centre at Angels’ Care in Howick too, who are supporting victims who come from areas of extreme poverty such as the informal settlements around Howick and 60% of cases are children less than 12 years of age.

Story
Angels’ Care Centre opened The Rape and Abuse Crisis Centre in July 2015. The main aim: to help children who are survivors of gender-based violence, abuse and neglect. They are uniquely focused on caring for children of abuse in the Howick area in the KZN Midlands within the Umngeni local municipality. The need for such a facility exists as sexual offences committed against women and children has reached alarming levels in South Africa in recent years.
It is a sad fact that approximately 3800 women and children are sexually assaulted on a daily basis in South Africa, whilst only 0.4% of sexual offenders are held accountable for their actions. Results obtained from cases that are reported shows that most victims come from areas of extreme poverty such as the informal settlements around Howick and 60% of cases are children less than 12 years of age.
The Kolisi Foundation is committed to serve alongside established partners, chosen for their documented work and track-records within the GBV field, who are striving to change the narrative of gender-based violence in South Africa.
Power2You Packs
With the help of organisations in the GBV space, they launched their Power2You Packs in August 2020. Ever since this resource tool was developed:
- They’ve resourced 20 NPO’s on the ground with these packs
- Distributed 13 000 Power2You Packs
- Reached 4 provinces
It consists of a pepper spray, whistles, emergency number wallet-size card, and a journal with resourceful information about seeking justice, legal help, and healing.
Gender-based violence has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Significant job loses, schools closing, and being in lockdown in confined spaces, combined with stress and isolation, have increased the risk of violence for women and children across all communities. The South African Police Services received about 87 000 gender-based violence calls during the first week of lockdown. In the first 3 weeks after lockdown started more than 120 000 victims had rung the SA National Helpline for GBV.
